Have you ever noticed that some people always seem to get ahead? No matter how difficult the situation at work, they always seem to wade their way through it. Perseverance involves going forward despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Having clear goals in mind and working towards them is the secret of success to keep abreast of your workload and meet your career goals.
Here are some tips for persevering in the workplace:
Develop a work plan
- Plan reasonable goals and realistic timelines to get them done
- Consider why you want these goals and what is their benefit to your job/life
- Break goals or tasks into small steps so that you don’t get discouraged
Be Encouraged
- Find the positive, uplifting, inspiring people in your office and regularly interact with them
- Keep an encouragement file of positive emails/letters that you have received from others
- Research stories and books about amazing people and read them to inspire yourself
- Post encouraging cartoons and quotes around your cubicle/office
Live in the Moment
- Don’t dwell on what has happened in the past
- Don’t worry about what might happen in the future
- Don’t fear that you will fail as success and failure often go together
Celebrate Your Successes
- Reward yourself when you complete a goal
- Document how many goals you have completed to encourage yourself
- Plan a social activity with your close friends or colleagues to celebrate your achievement
- Keep a diary of great experiences and epoch moments
Be Open Minded
- Try new things and experiment with new ways of doing things to strive for improvement
- Use professional development opportunities to find out how others perform the same tasks
Create a Support Network
- Find people who are doing what you want to do and befriend them
- Get a mentor to help guide you towards your career goals
- Build a community and become a giver and be the person everyone comes to for help

Practice an Holistic Approach
- Care for your mind, body, emotions and spirit
- Make quiet time to think and self reflect
- Practice stress reduction techniques such as deep breathing or yoga
Stay the Course
- Keep focused on your daily goals
- Periodically assess if your activities are moving you toward your goal
- Remember success doesn’t happen overnight
You might have obstacles along the way but if keep going you will eventually reach your goal. If you persevere long enough, you will eventually achieve your true potential and live a successful life.
