Originally from La Ronge, Tina Shaw (she/her) has a personal connection to the College of Nursing’s “Learn Where You Live” philosophy. After completing a year of nursing in Saskatoon through the Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan, Shaw decided to, instead, complete her diploma in Tourism and Recreation Management. This took her back to La Ronge where she worked as the Recreation Coordinator at the high school she had grown up attending.
Finding long-term, stable employment in the Tourism and Recreation sector wasn’t easy, which led Shaw to turn back to nursing. Once she was accepted to the University of Saskatchewan, she was pleased to find that she could stay in La Ronge and complete her entire degree from her hometown. She then worked as a registered nurse in long-term care in Shellbrook and at the correctional facility in Prince Albert. Continue reading

Hello everyone! I hope you are doing good and gearing up for the upcoming holiday season. Seems like the year just zoomed by and we are already in the most joyful month of the year.
I'd like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance and guidance I continually receive from past ASPA leaders and former executive members. Recognition is also due to our current Vice Presidents, Philip Hitchings, and Dawn Giesbrecht, who are providing impartial insights that aid us in steering ASPA in the right direction. Furthermore, I want to recognize the executive members for their contributions in devising various initiatives to enhance the membership experience. Our association is fortunate to have an exceptional contingent of ASPA members who volunteered their time for various committees. I encourage all ASPA members who can find some time to volunteer for ASPA committees and consider running for future leadership roles. Continue reading

Amaranta Sokol Como (she/her) is a Senior Strategic Officer in the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement (OVPIE) (Saskatoon campus). Balancing a diverse portfolio while completing her doctoral research in education, Sokol Como embodies the collaborative and opportunistic nature that gives the University of Saskatchewan its highly respected reputation. She is a member of Beardy’s Okemasis Cree Nation in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan and places importance on her small-town roots. Despite completing two degrees at the University of Saskatchewan (and working on a third) she has never lived in Saskatoon, instead finding relaxation in a daily commute outside the city. Hello everyone! I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy summer and were able to take some time for leisure and connecting with near and dear ones.
I'd also like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance and guidance I continually receive from past ASPA leaders. Recognition is also due to our current Vice Presidents, Philip Hitchings, and Dawn Giesbrecht, who are providing impartial insights that aid us in steering ASPA in the right direction. Our association is fortunate to have an exceptional contingent of ASPA members who volunteered their time for various committees. I encourage all ASPA members who can find some time to volunteer for ASPA committees and consider running for future leadership roles.
I would also like to mention that our ASPA staff members – Glenn Billingsley and Emily Hinatsu – have been doing an incredible job over the last several months and without their invaluable support, we would not run like a well-oiled machine.
Finally, I would also like to thank Ken Glover for his work continually providing IT support to ASPA. Continue reading
