February 2024 - What has ASPA been up to?

Prince Albert Campus Visit

The ASPA president and two vice presidents and our admin assistant visited the PA campus on November 20, 2023. Currently, there are seventeen (17) members at the PA campus and twelve (12) of the ASPA members working on PA campus attended our lunch and learn gathering. ASPA members from PA campus appreciated our visit. They also had many questions to leadership regarding issues such as benefits, leave, salary revision/reviews, vacation accumulation, and hosting events/socials in PA. Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) Occupational Health and Safety Feedback Report

The 2023 Saskatchewan Federation of Labour Occupational Health and Safety Conference was held in Saskatoon, on September 13th to 15th. Twenty-three ASPA members attended the conference this year to take in sessions focusing on prevention of violence, psychologically safe workplaces, OHS committees, OHS legislation, among others. ASPA sent a short survey to these 23 members to gather their anonymous feedback on the conference to determine the value of attending, evaluate the learning opportunities provided to our members, and whether they would attend again in the future. As we anticipate the upcoming academic year, I trust that everyone has been enjoying a summer filled with chances for leisure and reconnecting with others. As I take on the role of ASPA President for the 2023-2024 term, I want to extend my genuine gratitude to our outgoing President, LaVina Watts. Her outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to enhancing the ASPA reputation and elevating the standing of all members have been truly commendable. LaVina is consistently supporting me, whether it was addressing minor operational queries or tackling significant questions about the interpretation of articles in our collective bargaining agreement. ASPA Member Highlight – Kathleen McMullin, Indigenous Academic Advisor

Kathleen McMullin is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and a Cree traditionalist. She is currently an Indigenous Academic Advisor for the University of Saskatchewan Community of Aboriginal Nurses (UCAN) and lives in Prince Albert.

“I hold a BEd and MEd from the University of Saskatchewan and am currently doing data analysis for my PhD in Health Sciences, College of Medicine. I have interviewed Elders of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band on their lives from the 1940s to present. Their stories capture how Woodland Cree families create(d) reflections of themselves in their children and the interplay of home. Participants speak the language of possibility in co-creating healthy families and communities. Continue reading
