Michael Hewitt

Year Joined the U of S: 2022
Clinical Pharmacist – USask Chronic Pain Clinic (College of Pharmacy & Nutrition)
My name is Michael Hewitt and I was born and raised in Saskatoon. Although my roots will always be on the prairies, some of my formative years were spent living abroad. A year spent backpacking around Australia taught me about humility, budgeting, and the value of an education. A year spent teaching English in rural China taught me an appreciation for the educators in my life, a fondness for new cuisine, and a desire to continue expanding my comfort zone. I enjoy reading, music, sports, and outdoor activities of all sorts.
I received a BSP from the USask College of Pharmacy and Nutrition in 2012, and I have been a clinical pharmacist with the USask Chronic Pain Clinic since 2022. Prior to accepting my current role, I worked as a community pharmacist in and around Saskatoon for 10 years, much of that with an emphasis on addictions treatment and harm reduction. I was a member of the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy Professionals Complaints Committee from 2016-2023, and I served as Chair of that committee from 2019-2023. My current role involves helping residents of Saskatchewan who have chronic pain navigate medication management to improve their quality of life, and it provides me a great deal of professional and personal fulfillment. Our program has been acknowledged provincially, nationally, and internationally for our innovative work and I am so fortunate to be a member of such a fantastic team.
Throughout my time as an employee at the university, I have been appreciative of the role ASPA has played. The benefits that you and I enjoy as ASPA members are the direct result of the organization of our predecessors, and these will only be maintained or improved with persistent effort. I would be honoured to continue that effort on behalf of the ASPA membership.
Candice Pete-Cardoso

Year Joined U of S: 2007
Director – kihci-okâwîmâw askiy Knowledge Centre
Candice Pete-Cardoso is a nêhiyaw-iskwêw (Cree woman) from wâskicôsihk (Little Pine First Nation), Treaty 6 Territory. She is a proud mother of 2 and grandmother of 5.
Candice is an alumnus of USask and holds a Master of Public Administration, Bachelor of Commerce, and a Certificate in Indigenous Business Administration. She has over 25 years of experience working with federal, provincial, and Indigenous governments.
Candice’s early career started with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. She gained experience in the areas of human resources, economic development, and fiscal management. Her work related to the management of funding agreements between the federal government and Indigenous governments deepened her understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous communities.
Her expertise in these areas led her to the University of Saskatchewan where she worked as the Director of the Indigenous Peoples Resource Management/Coordinator of Aboriginal Programs for over 10 years. During her time at the University, over two hundred students successfully graduated with a certificate specializing in Indigenous lands and resource management. Candice ensured that the program met the needs of Indigenous communities by incorporating Indigenous content and worldviews into curriculum.
Driven by her belief that life should be a continuous learning journey, Candice explored new horizons. She accepted the role of Executive Director, Northern Engagement Branch, Ministry of Government Relations within the Government of Saskatchewan. This experience broadened her perspective and reinforced her passion for making a meaningful difference. Her passion for working with and for Indigenous communities brought her back to the University of Saskatchewan.
Candice returned to USask, where she supported the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement in operationalizing the office’s mandate. Her strategic acumen, and strong belief in ensuring that Indigenous peoples and communities are included in meaningful and respectful ways, contributed to the engagement approach for the development of the Indigenous Strategy at USask, as well as the development of the newly launched kihci-okâwîmâw askiy Knowledge Centre where she now serves as Director.

Laboratory Coordinator – GIFS
Born in Argentina, I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology before moving to Saskatoon to pursue a Master’s in Physiology at the University of Saskatchewan. After taking some time off to raise my children, I returned in 2022 to join the Veterinary Department. Currently, I work as a Laboratory Coordinator in the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) and am a member of ASPA.
Throughout my life, I have been a dedicated activist. In Canada, I have served on the Varsity View Community Garden Committee and the Library of Things administrative team. I am also a member-at-large of the Caswell Hill Community Association, where I manage the grooming of cross-country ski trails.
Currently, I volunteer as the President of the Saskatoon Judo Club within the YMCA and at the SCC on Caswell Hill Community School, organizing events and recruiting volunteers. Additionally, I am involved with the community and I am always finding way to make our neighborhood better.

I have campaigned for various causes, including extending library hours in the west past 6 PM to address service inequalities across the city. I organized the “Swap in the Park” event, recruiting over 15 volunteers and collaborating with the food bank, event focused on waste reduction. I planned and organized a nutritional learning program withing Caswell Hill School and the Food bank I planned that sadly was interrupted by COVID-19.
Having experienced financial hardship and relying on social assistance myself, I bring a unique perspective to my advocacy work. I am passionate about creating equitable opportunities and resources for all community members.
Alexis Dahl

Year Joined the U of S: 1998
Director of Programs – College of Arts & Science
After finishing my first USask degree (Education) and while still working on my second (Chemistry) I started working for USask in 1999. Over the years I worked in the Department of Chemistry as a Stores Clerk and Lab Demonstrator, in the Department of Political Studies as Administrative Assistant, assisted with the set-up year for the USask location of the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, and then for the last 15 years have worked for the College of Arts and Science as the Director of the Programs Office. My past volunteer work includes many years on the board of a summer camp, 3 years on the Stonebridge Community Association, and 10 years as a board member of a youth leadership conference held annually at Prairieland Park. A few years ago I felt that it was more than time to give back to ASPA and accepted a position on the Education committee. That lasted about a year before I stepped off to take on the position of co-lead of the Bargaining Committee, whose work resulted in the 2022-26 Collective Agreement. I view accepting the nomination to run for an executive position as another way to support my union, and whether I am elected or not I will continue to find ways to contribute.

Operational Lead – USask Prince Albert Campus
I first became an ASPA member in 1998, and for the past twenty years, I have been the Operational Lead of the Usask Prince Albert Campus. My position is fast-paced and multifaceted, encompassing many duties, including program coordination, recruitment, advising, and advancement. As well, I perform supervisory duties for both ASPA and CUPE staff. I’m interested in labour relations, and would be honoured to serve on the ASPA Executive, being a strong voice for my fellow ASPA members. As well, it is imperative that there is a voice from outside of Saskatoon Campus on the ASPA Executive to advocate for members located in Prince Albert and elsewhere. I serve on community committees, such as the City of Prince Albert’s Property Appeals Board, and I am on the Executive for both the Prince Albert Northcote and Prince Albert Federal NDP committees. I am Dr. Adi (Aditya) Manek, your current ASPA President and former Vice President from 2023 to 2024. Serving you in these roles has been a privilege, and I hope to continue my support on the Executive, and as your ASPA President over the coming three years, which includes an upcoming bargaining year. During my past term, I have received training in inclusive leadership, labour management, Indigenous reconciliatory efforts, and most importantly, collective bargaining to support you as a member. Voting for me would support ASPA in capitalizing on these investments.
In my professional capacity, I am an experienced researcher and operations manager. I currently work as a Lab Manager for the Neuroscience research cluster and Histology Core Facility in the Health Sciences Building. I have been on campus for more than 16 years and have been part of ASPA since February of 2022.

As a visible minority on campus and a former international student, I understand the unique strengths and perspectives that come with these identities. Julie works with faculty and instructors in the design, development, and support of online and technology-enabled learning.
Julie really enjoys serving as an advocate for students by ensuring high-quality learning experiences and helping the best teaching practices and brightest ideas of the teachers I work with come to life in their digital classrooms.
Julie is a USask alumna, where she has earned a B.Ed., B.Sc, and M.Ed. in Educational Technology and Design. In her time around campus, she has also been a Graduate Teaching Fellow and Seminar Instructor with the Department of Curriculum Studies, provided website support for the College of Education, and worked as a Teaching Assistant in the first-year Biology labs.
Julie is about to complete her first three-year term as an ASPA Executive member, which began in spring 2022. During that time, she has also served as ASPA’s representation on the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) Executive Council. This experience has been very valuable to her, both professionally and personally. Julie has appreciated every opportunity to hear more from other Executive members, general ASPA members all over campus, and union organizers around the province about their concerns and priorities in their working life.
Julie has learned a lot about how ASPA supports its members, collaborates with other unions, and interacts with the employer, and would love to continue contributing to ASPA’s mission and advocating for the general membership by renewing her term.
Julie’s philosophy of labour organization and collective bargaining can be summarized in a quote by Courtney Laudick: “A union isn’t an outside organization that comes in to help you, a union is YOU and your colleagues coming together to empower each other as a collective. And trust me, that’s way more powerful.”
In volunteer work outside of the university, Julie has been an on-air host and trainer at CFCR 90.5 FM (Saskatoon’s community radio station), as well as a music instructor, Marketing & Communications Committee and Board Member with local youth arts camp Girls Rock Saskatoon. Ashley works with students and faculty throughout the various stages of a student’s lifecycle. She enjoys every aspect of this work and love that she is able to support students throughout their entire program. Supporting students and leading them through their graduate programs has been a great privilege for her.
Ashley loves building relationships with students and collaborating with them to learn where there are “gaps” in information and resources. And then collaborating with her fellow staff members and faculty to bring awareness to these issues and to find a solution. This is something she hopes to also do as an ASPA executive. Ashley’s goal is to learn more about what ASPA members need and work to find solutions to areas of concern. She looks forward to serving her fellow colleagues like she does her students and faculty.
This fall 2024, Ashley will be starting the Graduate Certificate in Leadership program through Edwards School of Business. She hopes that her work experience and knowledge and skills gained through her future schooling will be an asset to the ASPA Executive Committee.

Dawn is once again willing to put in the time and effort to serve as a member of an executive that strives to best meet the needs of its membership. MCLAUGHLIN, Meghan

I began my journey on campus as a student just over 20 years ago. At the time, I was oblivious to the complexities it took to run a university, let alone navigate it successfully. Fast forward to today, I work in the College of Engineering as the Director of External Relations and Strategic Projects leading a fabulous team of five ASPA members. I have been employed with the University for the past 15 years and have spent 12 of those at the college.
A few strengths I can offer are bringing teams together to work across different disciplines and professions to achieve a common consensus, as well as supporting the community in delivering impact. I believe these could translate well as a representative of your voice on the ASPA executive. My goal will be to ensure individual and collective mechanisms are in place to support your careers and enable you to continue delivering meaningful work.
MEIER, Simona

My name is Simona Meier and I have been working as a Clinical Research Professional at the University of Saskatchewan for over 15 years. In my position, I help university faculty to set up, maintain and complete clinical research studies, provide clinical research expertise to research sites, research ethics boards and policy-makers, and act as a liaison among investigators, study staff, sponsors and other research, regulatory, and health agencies, in all administrative aspects of study management.
I enjoy volunteering, getting involved and contributing ideas and feedback. I also enjoy committee work and am currently on the Executive of the Canadian Chapter of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). I have also been a volunteer with the Saskatoon SCAT Street Cat Rescue.
I am interested in being on the ASPA Executive to contribute and apply my knowledge and experience in new ways for the benefit of ASPA members.
MANEK, Aditya

I am Dr. Adi (Aditya) Manek.I am an experienced researcher, people leader, and operations manager. For over a year, I have been working as a Lab Manager for the Neuroscience, Molecular design, and Microbiology, Immunology, and Virology research clusters in Health Sciences Building. In addition, I manage the Histology Core Facility and its staff. I operate out of USask Health Sciences and have been part of ASPA since February 2022, but have been on campus more than 14 years.
From 2018 until early 2022, I was a Histologist at Health Sciences and part of CUPE 1975. Prior to that, I was a research associate and previously a graduate student in the Department of Biology, here at USask.
On a personal note, I am originally from India and grew up amid one of the biodiversity hotspots (western ghats) of the world before I moved to the land of the living skies. While I was an undergraduate student in India, I was an active member of several organizations and managed several interdepartmental events as a batch representative, cultural coordinator, and president of the Zoology society. In addition, I have been part of several non-profit organizations supporting ecological conservation. In Canada, I have volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross for over 3 years and volunteer with the Saskatoon Dog Rescue.
Previously, being an international student and currently as a part of the visible minority at the U of S, an opportunity as a part of the ASPA executive would give me the ability to understand and voice concerns raised by fellow union members. I believe my background and skills would bring a unique perspective to the table. Thank you for your consideration!

- Education: Christine had her M.SC in Agriculture and Bioresources from the University of Saskatchewan and is working on professional certifications towards business communication and project management.
Christine’s unit is named “Research Excellence and Innovation” and Christine wants to bring both innovation and excellence to this union as well!
FAFARD, Alain

I was raised on a mixed farm near the proud French-Canadian hamlet of Ste-Marthe, SK which is located in southeastern Saskatchewan between Rocanville, SK and the Manitoba border. At a young age, I developed a very strong appreciation and love of nature, animals, and the environment. The values of honesty and being a hard worker were also instilled in him. I spent my youth working on the farm, training and riding horses, playing hockey, and studying hard. Though I excelled in academics, I initially had no desire to pursue post-secondary education so I entered the workforce after high school and worked at numerous jobs for several years such as road construction, operating heavy equipment, in a metal fabrication shop as sandblaster and forklift operator, farm labourer, grain elevator employee, oil rig worker, steam- and vac-truck operator, cook’s helper, and waiter. These experiences allowed me to save up some money and gain valuable work and life experience which I would not trade for the world. These jobs also helped persuade me that attending university was probably the right way to go in life!
I graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon in 2005 and worked in private mixed veterinary practice as an associate veterinarian until 2011. I served as a member of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA) Executive Council and on numerous SVMA committees during this time. I was also selected as an Emerging Young Leader by the SVMA and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. In 2011 I opened my own ambulatory mixed animal practice and operated it for eight years. In June of 2019 I was hired on as a Clinical Research Veterinarian at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) on the U of S campus.
After two and a half years at VIDO, on February 1st 2022 I moved on to a position as a Clinical Veterinarian with the U of S Animal Care and Research Support (ACRS) team, also sometimes referred to as the University Animal Care Committee. It is an exciting job with a lot of varying duties working with many different animal species. I help ensure that all research animals used on campus are treated humanely and that animal welfare is always a top priority in all areas of animal research.
At VIDO, I was not a member of any unions, but with my new position at ACRS I consider myself lucky to be a member of ASPA and I would like to volunteer on its Executive as a way of giving back and interacting with interesting people.
I remain passionate about nature and animals, spend time outdoors whenever possible, and try to keep physically fit at the Fitness Center. When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my spouse and our three year old son, as well as creating, building, and fixing things in my workshop. I thank you for your consideration as a possible member of the Executive!
MAIER, Julie

My name is Julie Maier and I am an Instructional Designer with the Distance Education Unit, which I joined in June of 2017. In my current role I work with faculty and instructors in the design, development, and support of online and technology-enabled teaching and learning. I really enjoy serving as an advocate for students by ensuring high-quality learning experiences, and helping the best teaching practices and brightest ideas of the teachers I work with come to life in their digital classrooms. I am an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan, where I have earned a B.Ed. (Secondary Math and Science), B.Sc. (Biology), and M.Ed. in Educational Technology and Design. In other activities in my time around campus, I have been a Graduate Teaching Fellow and Seminar Instructor with the Department of Curriculum Studies, provided website support for the College of Education, and worked as a Teaching Assistant in the first-year Biology labs.
Outside of the university, I have spent time volunteering with CFCR 90.5 FM (Saskatoon’s community radio station), where I was an On-Air Host and Host Trainer from 2012-2018. I’ve also been a volunteer organizer and bass guitar instructor with local youth arts camp Girls Rock Saskatoon, where I served on the Marketing & Communications Committee from 2017-2020 and sat as a Board Member in 2020. My time with both of these groups helped me learn a lot about the work that goes into community organizing, and gain a deeper appreciation for the value of contributing to such work – something I would love to continue by serving as an ASPA Executive Committee member.
Lately, I spend most of my free time playing bass in a local rock band (The Garrys), or on long walks with my husband and our pup Rosie. Thank you for reading and for considering voting for me!

More recently, I joined ASPA’s Jurisdictional Review Committee where we review new positions to determine which union’s jurisdiction the position belongs to through discussions with People and Resources and the other unions on campus. Throughout my tenure on the ASPA executive, I have come to learn that I bring a fresh perspective and thoughtful opinions. I enjoy this committee work, and I hope to be able to continue to represent you in the future.
HOMINUKE, Tamara

Hi, I’m Tamara Hominuke and I would like to be one of your representatives on the Executive Committee for ASPA.
I have worked at the University of Saskatchewan since 2013 within the Health Sciences. I am currently working as a Senior Administrator Coordinator in the College of Medicine. I love my job as I get to work with students, faculty and staff from both Saskatoon and Regina campuses.
I believe the University of Saskatchewan is an incredible educational institution. During the past 7 years here, I have had the opportunity to work towards creating a campus that is diverse and inclusive, joined professional committees and enrolled as a student – I will graduate this year with a Masters in Education.
In my personal life, I am a mother of two boys and have been married to my partner, Joel, for almost 7 years. I recently started a book club for working women as a way of creating community.
Having benefitted from the rich educational experience USask has to offer, I am excited to work with the ASPA team in order to provide our union members with the support and advocacy they need to continue to make this an educational institution a leader in postsecondary education.
Thank you for your consideration.
Tamara
BARON, Danielle

Hi everyone, my name is Danielle and I am a USask alumnus and a current member of the College of Agriculture and Bioresources Dean’s Office. I have been the research facilitator for the college since 2016. Prior to this, I lived in Edmonton for six years while completing my graduate degree in cognitive neuroscience followed by working at the University of Alberta. There is never a dull moment in my current position with AgBio, as it includes working with faculty research programs, grants and contracts; strategic planning; industry and stakeholder outreach; and research communications. I have been married for eight years and have two young daughters, Beatrice and Ivy. I am interested in joining the ASPA Executive because I have served on various professional and community committees in the past and would like the opportunity to contribute to my association in a new capacity.
EDER, Jonathan

My name is Jonathan Eder, and I am a Project Coordinator for the Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) at the U of S main campus in Saskatoon. I have been in this position since October 2018. Prior to my employment at the U of S, I worked as an electrician across Saskatchewan and received my Journeyperson’s certificate in 2012. In addition to my employment at the U of S, I am enrolled in the College of Education, where my undergraduate degree is nearing completion. My long-term goals include obtaining my PMP (Project Manager Professional) designation, followed by an MBA through the Edwards School of Business. During the 2019/2020 fall and winter semester’s, I was an executive member of the Education Students Society serving as the Vice President of Academic. In my spare time I try to be as active as possible with my 5-year-old daughter. Some of our favourite’s are rock climbing, bike riding, avoiding the lava on the playground and making jewelry with coloured beads. I also enjoy playing hockey whenever the opportunity comes along. I am a huge fan of the Huskies hockey, football, and it goes without saying…the Riders!
YIN, Helen

My name is Helen Yin and I work in Department of Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering as a lab coordinator for the past 6 years. I have been with ASPA since I started working in this position. I was trained in environmental engineering and the reason why I chose environmental engineering was because I want to make a difference to make our planet better.
I have been moved around a lot and didn’t feel home anywhere. Saskatoon is the place I have lived the longest since I was 18 moving out of my parents’ place. Recently I came to the realization that I couldn’t root that is why I didn’t feel home anywhere. Now I am intentionally doing rooting work. I feel that I will root deeper if I get involved society more and give more to the society. Being an executive member to me is a good starting point.
Life to me is an adventure and people with different stories are the most valuable beautiful gifts to our life. I am excited to know more people and connect more with people from different backgrounds.
I am a responsible, easy going, cooperative person. I am well organized, details orientated while still keep the vision of the bigger picture.
Thank you! Hope I can get elected.

DE JONG, Willem

Willem de Jong joined the University, ASPA, and ICT in early 2015. Though roles and responsibilities have changed, he has been a part of the Medicine IS team since he started.
Outside the University, Willem has been involved with the improvised and stand-up comedy community in Saskatoon. Willem usually commutes to campus by bicycle and enjoys board games with friends and watching the latest arthouse film in a virtually empty theatre.
Or, at least, he did.
In this new world, Willem has traded in his office desk for the kitchen table, the water cooler for a Brita jug and Starbucks for, well, Starbucks. He usually commutes barefoot and enjoys solitaire and watching cheesy documentaries on Netflix.
